Last night, Rihanna finally released a new song titled ‘FourFiveSeconds’ featuring Kanye West and Paul McCartney (listen here). But wait… one can help to notice that the song is by Westbury Road Entertainment (a 2015 company) while being distributed by Roc Nation Records. Take a look.
Westbury Road is where Rihanna calls home in Barbados, so it is only fitting that that would be the name of her own record label.
Although no deal has formally been announced, it appears Jay Z is allowing Rih to make a impactful business move giving her creative control over her album. It appears whatever deal the two made, it is sort of like what Beyoncé does with her label, Parkwood Entertainment, while her newest album ‘BEYONCÉ‘ still maintained ties with Columbia Records, a company by Sony.
I believe this is an extremely intelligent move for her, she has only presented us with growth throughout her career. This will determine if Rihanna will become the true icon she is on the road to become. Although what she is doing is very similar to Bey, who else would you expect to be the first to make the move to do so other than someone under Jay Z’s wing?
